December Saturday Clubs!

Date posted: December 30, 2014

Seasons Greetings! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! We’ve wrapped up yet another fun month of Saturday Clubs, and yet again I don’t know where the time goes. This month also marked my first full year in the Coordinator position, and I am still so excited for what each day brings!

December 6th was our first December date for Saturday Clubs!

Saturday Kids Club embraced one of the coolest months of the year by celebrating with a ‘FROZEN’ MOMENTS theme! Using the extremely popular movie, Frozen as our inspiration…our activities were strewn full of Frozen fun, including:

  • Frozen Freeze Tag – Groups 3, 4 & 5 played a game of freeze tag in the gym where they used cans of silly string to represent Elsa’s frozen powers to “freeze” people. It was a lot of messy fun to be had!
  • Olaf Pops – Groups 1 & 2 made Olaf snowmen by pushing powdered donuts onto a wooden skewer and decorating them into snowmen by using food coloring gels and fruit roll-ups. They were delicious!

Saturday Young Adult Club kicked off December by having a TASTY BAKE-OFF evening! We made countless amounts of holiday treats as groups competed to make the most delicious tasting snacks! Some of our favorites included:

  • Holiday Buttons – Groups developed an assembly line of sorts to create this easy to make and delicious snack! We used gluten-free pretzels and placed Hershey kisses on top, quickly baked them in the oven to melt and pressed m&ms on top. We highly recommend making these at home!
  • Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies – We put a seasonal twist on traditional chocolate chip cookies by adding mint chocolate, needless to say….they were delicious!

We also had an extremely special event for both clubs where Clough United Methodist Church visited for the second year in a row with Santa, a festive group of elves and a present for each of our participants. It was such a special day for both Kids Club and Young Adult Club and we are so appreciative of everything that Clough United did for us! Here are a few pictures of our participants opening gifts and enjoying the parties they threw for us!

December 20th was the last Saturday Clubs for the year!Saturday Kids Club celebrated with a WINTER HOLIDAYS theme! We spent time doing countless holiday activities to lift our seasonal spirits! Our favorites included:

  • Santa Beards – Group 1 & 2 made their own Santa and Elf beards by gluing cotton balls onto card-stock paper and adding elastic string. It was great having multiple Santas walking around camp!
  • Pine Needle Painting – Groups 1, 2 & 3 went on nature walks to collect pine needles that they then dipped in green and red paint to paint holiday murals!
  • Gingerbread Houses – Group 4 & 5 made some super gingerbread houses from graham crackers and vanilla frosting. They then decorated their houses with gum drops, M&Ms and candy canes!

Saturday Young Adult competed in a CHRISTMAS CONTESTS evening, which resulted in a competitive holiday spirit and we wound things up by watching everyone’s favorite Christmas move, Elf! It was great to celebrate the holiday with our camp SYAC family! Some other fun activities included:

  • Snowman Bowling – We put a chilly twist on bowling by decorating our pins to resemble snowmen. We set them up on the long tables and bowled the time away! We have some expert bowlers in our midst!
  • DIY Ornaments – To make a keepsake holiday item for each participant to take home, we brought plain plastic sphere ornaments. Participants were able to decorate them how they wished, with most pouring paint inside and shaking it up to cover the entire surface. It turned into a fun sensory activity!
  • Design Your Own Gift Paper – Another keepsake item that we made was decorating butcher paper with red and green paint and cookie cutters – there was even enough left over for me to wrap presents for my family with, and they loved it!

Have a Happy New Year!
