October 2015 Saturday Clubs!

Date posted: November 5, 2015

G’DAY! The month of October has been quite the busy one for us at Given! Our Saturday Kids Club and Saturday Young Adults Club are booming and we are excited every single time our campers walk through the doors with huge smiles on their faces. I wanted to share with you some of my favorite activities that we have participated in at each program!

Saturday Kids Club (SKC) held a Superheroes with Superpowers program on October 10th. Campers came in their superhero outfits, ready to tackle the day’s activities! For Sports & Games, groups participated in a “Villain Take Over” where they worked together to overcome different obstacles to defeat the evil villain. During Nature, groups built nature-themed pinatas by paper-macheing leaves onto balloons. While they were drying – we brought out real pinatas filled with candy for our superheroes to destroy! In Cooking, groups used their super powers to turn the cupcakes they made into rainbow colors – which made them extra tasty to eat!

On October 24th, SKC held our Halloween program where we tapped into our Halloween spirit a week early and completed various spooky projects! In Arts & Crafts we made life-size skeletons by tracing the outline of our bodies on butcher paper and taping down the bones of the skeleton. We then painted the entire piece of butcher paper black and ripped off the tape to reveal the white skeleton! In Music & Drama, groups participated in a “Ghoulish Haunted House” where they had to use their senses to decide what was in each mystery box – for example, are these carrot sticks or witches’ fingers??? We also had all groups dress as mummies in the gym to participate in our annual Mummy Relay Race! The Halloween costumes that our campers wore were so fun to see – we had a pirate, a Ghostbuster, Superman and even Gumby to name a few!

Saturday Young Adults Club (SYAC) held a Game Night on October 10th which was filled with board games, life-size games and even reality TV games! We had a “Giant Jenga” game built for us by our maintenance team and groups had a blast playing this game over and over again. We also created our own “Tetris Art” by designing masterpieces with the different shaped Tetris blocks and colors – it turned into a great puzzle! We ended our evening with a Karaoke-style competition where our participants got the chance to show off their singing and dancing skills! It was a blast!

On October 24th, SYAC also had our Halloween program which allowed us to celebrate in our costumes with our camp family! In Cooking, groups made delicious Candy Corn Quesadillas and Mummies in a Blanket that we served along with dinner. We had plans to hold a campfire outside but unfortunately the weather forced us to stay indoors – we still had a blast telling spooky Halloween stories and making yummy s’mores! During the Halloween Dance, we had a station for painting and decorating mini pumpkins and a station where we were table bowling using medium-sized pumpkins as the balls. There were constant crowds around these tables!

Thank you for reading about what we have been up to this month at Saturday Clubs! Don’t forget to check in at the end of next month to find out what we did in November!
