On Friday, August 9, Greater Cincinnati construction companies came together in the spirit of giving back and making a positive difference in their community! A team of thirty-three professionals from thirteen agencies spent the day volunteering at Stepping Stones’ summer day camp for children and teens with disabilities.

In its seventh year, “Construction Come Together Day” is organized by Allied Construction Industries and Jostin Construction Co. The event takes months of planning but has become a beloved tradition, with both new and familiar faces attending every year. As volunteers, the administrative and finance professionals get the chance to step away from their daily office routines in favor of becoming camp buddies in fishing, music and art activities.

Rewarding Experience for New and Returning Volunteers

“I’ve been in a very active group,” enthused Tyler Edsall, a finance analyst at Messer Construction. “It’s been a really great experience getting to know all the campers and hearing about what they enjoy doing. I’ve been hanging out a lot with Cameron and Thomas and it’s been fun talking to them about their favorite movies. They also really loved visiting the pool.”

Some of the professionals turned the day of service into a family bonding experience. Nathaniel Duesing, an eighth grade student at St. Antoninus joined his mom, Kathleen Duesing of Turner Construction, in volunteering before he headed back to school. “The environment here is super friendly,” he shared while comparing Stepping Stones to other camps he has attended. “All of the staff are encouraging and I’ve had a lot of fun hanging out with the campers.”

As a returning volunteer, Chris Bongen of Turner Construction was able to reflect on what the experience has been like over the years. She first attended the volunteer event in 2016 and has enjoyed coming since as an annual summer tradition. “For us, this day is such a break from the normal,” she said. “You really forget everything on the outside and get entirely immersed in an environment that’s so positive and accepting. It’s a fantastic experience.”

A Special Gift for Each Camper

Fusion Safety & Business Solutions, Inc. was a newcomer to the Construction Come Together event this year. Company president Jaime Burch made the day even more special by sponsoring festive gift bags for each camper that were filled with an assortment of small toys. Fusion staff members Rob Lopez and Lance Clayton personally assembled the 200 gift bags and commented that, “it was great to see how excited the campers were to receive a gift that was just for them!”

Stepping Stones extends a big thank you to all the corporate partners who participated in the event, including Allied Construction Industries; Fusion Safety & Business Solutions, Inc.; The Hartford; Hylant Group; Jostin Construction, Inc.; Liberty Mutual Surety; Lithko Contracting; Logan Lavelle Hunt; Messer Construction Co.; RJE Business Interiors; Roehr Insurance Agency; Turner Construction and VonLehman & Company, Inc.
