Before an eager audience that included participants from all three of Stepping Stones’ Adult Day program locations (BeauVita West, UCP and Allyn), the local raptor preservation introduced a Falcon named Lucy, a Red Shoulder Hawk and Sylvester the Great Horned Owl.
From speeds of up to 200 MPH to enhanced eyesight and diets that include possums and skunks, the adults were learned and asked questions about the varying characteristics of each bird. Such as, the Red Shoulder Hawk is able to see the same colors as the human eye, as well as additional colors like violet to help track food sources.
A surprising fact to everyone was learning that while large in size, Sylvester is actually smaller than the females of his Great Horned Owl breed. Interestingly, the owls also have increased vision but lack a sense of smell.
In addition to meeting the birds, participants also discovered differences in texture and wing-span between the raptors. Passing around preserved examples, everyone was able to use their senses to compare the wings and feet of a falcon, hawk and owl for similarities and differences.
Without a doubt, Raptor, Inc.’s visit is a new favorite among our Adult Day program. We thank the preservation for partnering with Stepping Stones to educate our participants on these truly remarkable creatures!
