Xavier Community Action Day Comes to Stepping Stones

Xavier Community Action Day Comes to Stepping Stones I CincinnatiOn Oct. 23, Stepping Stones was delighted to participate in the Xavier University Community Action Day — an event with students, faculty and family completing service projects around Greater Cincinnati as well as alumni joining in across the country!

A team of seven volunteers joined us for a beautiful morning in Saturday Kids Club! This popular program operates at our Given Campus in Indian Hill, creating social and recreation opportunities for children and young teens with disabilities throughout the school-year.

The volunteers bonded with participants during neat sensory science activities like concocting elephant toothpaste as well as making mummy portraits and playing pumpkin games ahead of the Halloween holiday.

The Xavier Community Action Day was organized by students in celebration of Dr. Colleen Hanycz’s induction as the local university’s 35th president

Step-Up Celebrates Class of 2021 Graduation Season

Stepping Stones 2021 Graduation Ceremonies in the Step-Up Autism Alternative Education ProgramClass of 2021 gained two new members as Stepping Stones’ Step-Up Autism Alternative Education program applauded the accomplishments of two gentlemen this spring.

Founded in 2004, Step Up was the first program of its kind in the region and offers individualized educations for students with severe autism. Stepping Stones partners with local school districts to serve those who are unable to succeed in a typical classroom setting at our 23-acre Given Campus in Indian Hill. The program currently serves students from more than 10 districts and provides a learning environment where they excel in their studies while developing communication and functional living skills.

The Spring 2021 graduation ceremonies of John Best and Roderick Hollis Jr. were milestones in the progress the students have made in their education. The celebrations also marked the progress we have all made in emerging from the global pandemic.

Unable to be together in person last spring, Stepping Stones hosted drive-by graduations for 2020 graduates. To present students with their certificates of completion before an audience of their families, classmates and educators is a beloved tradition we are glad to continue.

We congratulate our Step Up 2021 graduates John Best and Roderick Hollis Jr. on their tremendous achievement. We also wish them continued success as they enter the exciting next chapter of adulthood!

Students with Autism Benefit from Weekly Martial Arts Classes

Every Thursday, calls of “Kiai” are heard on the grounds of our Given Campus in Indian Hill! The Japanese term echoing through the air is a joyful sound as students of the Step-Up Autism Alternative Education program have resumed in-person martial arts classes this fall.

With COVID-19 modifications in place, Master Strickland of Cincinnati Marital Arts Club leads middle and high school students in a series of exercises designed to develop agility, balance and coordination. “Never say I can’t — always say I’ll try,” Strickland enthusiastically calls out, encouraging students to build upon their martial arts skills in a new routine each week.

Like so many, Stepping Stones’ program structure changed in the wake of the pandemic this spring with students and teachers adjusting to an at-home learning model. The continuation of in-person classes and the pride on students’ faces as they master their martial arts technique are positive measures of progress.

“The classes with Master Strickland give students the opportunity to gain confidence while socializing with their peers,” shares Educational Services Director Megan Wingerberg. “They are also a wonderful way of introducing a new skill in a positive and inclusive environment.”

Step-Up was founded in 2004 as the region’s first alternative education program and currently serves students from 11 local school districts. The program’s martial arts instruction is financially assisted by generous support from the John Hauck Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, John W. Hauck and Narley L. Haley, Co-Trustees.

Master Strickland has been a champion of Stepping Stones and a fantastic mentor to participants for a number of years. In addition to Step-Up, he also leads in-person martial arts classes for our Adult Day Services program.

Saturday Young Adults Club Returns for the Fall 2020 Season

Stepping Stones Saturday Young Adults Club I Cincinnati, OhioAfter breaking for the summer camp, Stepping Stones’ Saturday Young Adults Club is back in full swing! The popular recreation program invites teens and young adults with disabilities for an evening of connecting with their peers over seasonal activities.

Saturday Young Adults Club operates every weekend from 3 to 8 pm at Stepping Stones’ Given Campus in Indian Hill. With 23 scenic acres, accessible hiking trails and several sheltered program spaces, it is the perfect environment for outdoor activities.

Getting in the spirit of the season, club members have enjoyed a series of fall-themed activities! On a nature scavenger hunt, participants explored the world around them, looking for various types of leaves and other natural objects such as pinecones. Staying active, the program also took advantage of beautiful weather with outdoor yoga sessions and soccer matches.

In Sensory Science, the small groups took part in a neat science experiment that made popcorn seeds — dance!! Participants have also gotten in touch with their creative side, making colorful maracas and painting canvases using a resist art technique with leaves found around campus.

Looking for Weekend Recreation Opportunities?

With COVID-19 modifications in place, Stepping Stones’ Saturday Young Adults Club has a handful of openings for new participants. The program serves individuals age 15 through 25 and each session is $55. Club dates with openings are: Dec. 5 and Dec. 19.

Michelman Volunteers Lend Helping Hands at Stepping Stones

Michelman Chief Operating Officer Kreg Keesee volunteering at Stepping Stones.

On Sept. 25, Stepping Stones was glad to host a team of Michelman volunteers for a day of community service! A small but mighty 6-man crew visited our Given Campus in Indian Hill, as our very first volunteer group since March. They took advantage of clear skies and sunshine, spending a beautiful fall day completing outdoor projects.

Michelman‘s volunteer experience at Stepping Stones was the culmination of months of coordinating and modifying plans during the pandemic. Originally, the team was scheduled to volunteer in Adult Day Services – a year-round program where adults and seniors with varying disabilities build independence. Current circumstances prompted an alternative plan, with the volunteers lending helping hands to our maintenance team.

With 23 acres, our Given Campus has a number of outdoor projects where volunteer support is appreciated. The Michelman volunteers worked with Maintenance Coordinator Rich Events to make updates to a fence line beside Hillside Hall. They also dedicated their afternoon to raking up the many leaves blanketing the playground, used by our weekend Saturday Club programs as well as students of Step-Up Autism Alternative Education.

While original plans needed to change, Michelman’s community service day at Stepping Stones was a great success! We very much appreciate their willingness to adapt with us and spend a day beautifying our grounds.

Stepping Stones’ Got Talent!

Talent shows are some of my favorite camp wide activities!

For our overnight staycations, we do talent shows every Tuesday evening. They get pretty epic! Cabins are encouraged to perform group acts, and we have seen some pretty funny ones.

Individuals can perform acts as well. They most often perform in a karaoke style manner. Some of our more common performances include Don’t Stop Believin’, Uptown Funk, and the ladies love performing to Taylor Swift. We have quite the variety though! We’ve had a Ghostbusters dance, jokes, and rock band performances.

We had our summer day camp talent show last week, and it was fabulous! There was quite a bit of young talent.

A Patriotic Barbecue at Summer Camp-Given!

G’day Everyone!

Last Thursday, July 2nd, we celebrated Independence Day a couple of days early with our annual barbecue and dance! The volunteer group, Resurgent Capital Services, kindly donated their time and hundreds of hot dogs, hamburgers, cake and watermelon! It was a feast fit for camp! They arrived early in the day to begin grilling, and the smells coming from the pavilion were amazing, to say the least!

We didn’t let the rain dampen our patriotism on this day! Our kid groups held their picnics on blankets in the gym and our teen groups camped out in the pavilion at picnic tables! Once everyone was done eating, we held a dance party for the teen groups! DJ Ed, our critically acclaimed DJ at Stepping Stones, played some rockin’ music that inspired everyone to break-dance, group dance and create many, many conga lines around the pavilion! It was such a blast to see everyone smiling and enjoying themselves in this special way! We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event possible! Here are a few pictures from the day for you to enjoy!

Indian Hill Fifth Graders Lend a Helping Hand

stepping-stones-indian-hill-volunteers-cincinnati (4)140 fifth graders from Indian Hill Elementary School volunteered at Stepping Stones as their end-of-school-year philanthropic project. Principal Melisssa Stewart joined the students and their teachers as the group helped Stepping Stones prepare for the summer Day Camp for children with disabilities.

Student volunteers helped assemble activity packs for the campers, compiled information booklets, created tissue paper flowers to decorate an upcoming luau party, cleaned picnic benches and dusted cob webs in the camp shelters.

Parent Cecily Harness organized the event. Her husband, Bob Harness, was a Stepping Stones volunteer for years. “He loved volunteering and we love Stepping Stones,” Mrs. Harness said.
“The kids will be graduating from elementary school and they’re going to be doing volunteer hours in the upper grades. We thought it would be good to see and understand how you can help the community,” she said.
