Kings High School Students Visit Adult Program for ‘Senior Service Day’

On Wed., Sept. 11, twelve seniors from Kings High School stepped out of the classroom for a day of service at Stepping Stones’ Camp Allyn location in Batavia, Ohio. Kings High School “Senior Service Day”
The volunteer experience was part of Kings High School’s “Senior Service Day”, an annual tradition that teaches the value of giving back and connects students with nonprofit agencies around Greater Cincinnati.
This is the second year a group of seniors from Kings elected to visit Stepping Stones’ Adult Day Services program as part of the event. The year-round program provides art, life skills, technology and community inclusion activities to adults and seniors with varying disabilities. Seeing the immediate impact of their service at Stepping Stones is what keeps the students coming back.
“There’s something really special about connecting with someone and understanding what their life is like — and how you can support them,” shared Kaleigh Cooke. Cooke is a student leader of the school’s Community Service Club and helped organize this year’s service project.
A Life-Size Game of Monopoly
At Camp Allyn, the senior volunteers were paired with participants of the Adult Day program and divided into teams for an interactive game of Monopoly. A maze of sidewalks on the 47-acre property had been transformed into a life-size Monopoly board with various obstacles and even an official “jail”.
While navigating through the game, the four teams drew different challenges when landing on “Community Chest” spaces. They also shot baskets at a basketball hoop and raced to build towers before advancing onward. In the active game team spirit was very high with lots of high-fives and cheering one another along.
Following the game of Monopoly, the students joined participants in using our new outdoor bowling lane and performing duets on stage. From classic rock to popular hits from today, the karaoke hour proved that song and dance have a way of bringing everyone together.
“My favorite part of every student visit is the moment they realize that we’re all more alike than we are different,” remarked Stepping Stones’ Volunteer & Community Liaison Moira Grainger. “It’s a special moment when the students discover a common ground with our participants – a universal way of engaging and communicating with one another.”
