Christ College of Nursing Students Volunteer at Weekend Respites
Date posted: December 3, 2019
Students of The Christ College of Nursing are learning the value of a volunteer experience at Stepping Stones! This fall, the nursing students have been routinely spending their Saturdays volunteering in our Weekend Respite program. As volunteers, the students befriend participants while joining them in skill-building and creative activities. For the nursing experience, this real-life exposure to the clients they will support in their careers represents a service and learning component towards completing their education.
Stepping Stones’ Weekend Respite program provides a leisurely retreat for teens and adults with disabilities. Participants connect with their peers while engaging in recreation activities in a positive and inclusive environment.
The Christ College of Nursing students have been a welcomed addition! They have bonded with our participants while learning that we’re all more alike than different. It’s a community partnership that has brought a lot of joy both to the participants as well as the students.
“It’s nice to see people who really care,” shared Rec & Leisure Coordinator Jenn Schott. “Even though they are doing this for school, the volunteers seem to really enjoy themselves and are getting out of their shells. Our participants also really enjoy their visits. They love it so much that they will run up to them wanting all of their attention.”
