Date posted: March 10, 2020
On Feb. 27, adult participants of Stepping Stones developed their cooking skills while preparing an African feast at The Learning Kitchen. Located in West Chester, the business offers cooking classes that are fun and social on a variety of cuisines from around the globe.Master Chefs in the Making
At personal cooking stations, each participant set out to prepare a three-course meal that included fried plantains, a salad and traditional African meat pie. Before starting on their appetizers, everyone washed their hands and learned about maintaining safety in a cooking environment. Then, the chefs got to work! They pealed, sliced and fried bananas. They learned to prep, roll and knead dough for their main dish. They also learned proper knife techniques while dicing vegetables for a salad.
Throughout the cooking class, The Learning Kitchen’s Chef Timmy Kirk provided demonstration and guidance. Kirk has studied cooking throughout Asia, taking classes in China, Japan, India and more. Before coming to Cincinnati, he worked at Q House Modern Chinese – named Denver’s “Best Restaurant” in 2018 by Eater Magazine.
After preparing their three-course meal, everyone enjoyed a family style dinner and discussed the different flavors behind each dish. The experience was a rewarding way for participants to learn more about African culture while developing cooking skills in an environment that celebrates all level of ability.
