What is camp like during the winter?

Date posted: March 4, 2016

At our Allyn campus, people often ask, “what’s camp like in the winter?” Good question! Our Allyn campus is still a place where our participants have tons of fun. This cold weather can’t stop us from having great programs–our weekend respites happen all winter!

During the winter, the campus looks like a whole new place. You can see a lot more of the property when the leaves aren’t on the trees. Sometimes during the warmer seasons, it can be easy to forget that the campus is home to a lot of wildlife, but during the winter, we can see all sorts of animal tracks! We have a lot of deer and rabbits that have been traversing around camp. While we don’t see their tracks, we can hear woodpeckers pretty frequently. Those guys are loud–do you think pecking gives them headaches?!

Of course, sometimes this winter weather throws us off. I love to ski, but I can’t complain when it’s 60 degrees and sunny in January! We love any chance we can get to be outside and do archery, go fishing, and play outdoor sports all year long. During some of our warmer weekends, we’ve been able to have scavenger hunts, play basketball, and go for bike rides.

Even when the cold weather hits us, we have plenty of fun indoors. Some of our recent activities have included glow-in-the-dark slime, making delicious pizza cookies, decorating our own football pretzels for the Super Bowl, and playing pool noodle soccer. We try to stay active even when we’re inside with volleyball, bowling, and dance parties.

We had a blast making snowball catapults recently!

Stay warm, everyone! Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you at one of our Stepping Stones programs soon!
