November Saturday Clubs!

Date posted: November 18, 2014

Hi there! It is hard to believe that our Saturday Clubs for the month of November have already come to an end! Where does the time go? It sure has been an eventful month for us, with a handful of outside guests and community partners coming in for various program adventures! We have seen a significant drop in temperatures for both clubs, but our enthusiasm has continued to shine brightly!

November 1st was our first November date of Saturday Clubs!

Saturday Kids Club kicked of the month by celebrating with a LITERARY GENIUSES day! This was our first time ever exploring a theme like this, where we brought our favorite books to life through various activities, crafts and games! Some of the activities included:

  • Wild Thing Puppets – Group 3 made awesome puppets from brown paper bags that they decorated with feathers and googly eyes to become the characters from the popular book and move, “Where the Wild Things Are”!
  • Quidditch – Groups 3, 4 & 5 played the popular game of Harry Potter in the gym, where they used hockey sticks as their broomsticks and hung hula hoops from soccer goals posts to use as their scoring system!
  • Another huge moment of the day was the Cape Ceremony with ArtWorks! If you have not yet seen the news clip, please check it out! It was such a special day for all involved!

Saturday Young Adult Club began November by dedicating ourselves to a night of HEALTHY & ACTIVE LIVING! We put the focus on learning how to make healthy but tasty snacks, playing active games and learning about nutrition and the different food groups!

  • Club Kickbox – Our evening program had a special visitor in the form of a professional kickboxing instructor! Heather M. from Cincinnati Sports Club visited SYAC and put us through an intense 40 minutes of cardio and kickboxing. I was highly impressed by the stamina of our crew and they had a blast learning the different kicks and punches!
  • Nutrition Scavenger Hunt – Groups participated in a scavenger hunt that led them to create their own Food Group pyramids by cutting out foods from magazines and placing them into the correct food groups!
  • Fruit Smoothies – Group 3 made delicious fruit smoothies from blueberries, strawberries and raspberries! It was such a healthy and tasty snack for them to make!

November 15th was our second day of Saturday Clubs in November! Both clubs of course celebrated Thanksgiving with the thankful holiday coming up just around the corner!

Saturday Kids Club celebrated with our annual CAMPSGIVING that allowed us to celebrate the holiday with our camp family! These activities definitely got us into the Thanksgiving mindset:

  • Salt Leaf Painting – Groups 1 & 2 decorated leaf outlines with a unique form of salt paintings, some participants even painted them with fabulous water colors! They turned out really well!
  • Thanksgiving Potholders – Groups 4 & 5 used acrylic and fabric paints to decorate designs onto washcloths that are to be used as Potholders to help make your Thanksgiving feasts complete!
  • Apple Pie Bites – Group 1 & 3 made their own version of apple pies, by creating Apple Pie Bites by cutting up apples, mixing in cinnamon and rolling it up in crescent dough. They loved snacking on these after lunch!

Saturday Young Adult Club also celebrated with Thanksgiving-related activities, along with our annual GIVE BACK NIGHT! We had a great time in the evening working on different projects that allowed us to give back to our community!

  • Corn Mosaics – We dyed corn kernels blue, green, red and purple and then glued them down in colorful patterns onto Thanksgiving-themed templates.
  • Apple, Pumpkin & Cherry Pies – Groups worked hard baking these different kinds of pies and had a blast rolling out the dough and making different patterns on top! They feasted on their pies during our evening program later that night!
  • Give Back Projects – We made our own recycled paper from old newspapers, decorated Thank You cards to be sent to our countries veterans and made Holiday Gak to hand out to Kids Club participants at the next Kids Club!

Thanks for catching up on what we’ve been up to at Saturday Clubs! The month of December looks to be a festive treat with Kids Club celebrating “Frozen” Moments and Winter Holidays and Young Adult Club enjoying a Tasty Bake-Off and a Christmas Contests night!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
